River Gallery proudly announces our August 2024 exhibition, showcasing the remarkable talents of recipients of the R. Guy Cowan Scholarship. Scheduled to open on August 17th and run through September 14th, 2024, at River Gallery, located in the heart of the Old Detroit Shopping Center in Rocky River, this exhibition promises to be a testament to the innovation and creativity fostered by the scholarship.
Participating artists include the following R. Guy Scholarship Recipients: Paige Stine 2022-23, John Peterson 2021-22, Riley Rist 2020-21, Benjamin Gutberlet 2019-20, Alisa Reid 2017-18, Kimberly Chapman 2016 – 17, Fox Nicely 2016-17, Christopher Phillips 2012-13, Valerie Grossman 2010-11, Brendan Barnes 2008-09, Brian Sarama 2007-08, & 2006-07
The exhibition will feature an array of functional and sculptural ceramic pieces, each embodying the highest standards of quality and design excellence. Since its inception, the R. Guy Cowan Scholarship has served as a beacon for aspiring ceramic artists, providing them with the support and recognition needed to pursue their artistic endeavors.
Established in 2002 by the Cowan Pottery Museum Associates in collaboration with the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA), the R. Guy Cowan Scholarship honors the legacy of R. Guy Cowan, a visionary ceramic artist and educator. Over the years, the scholarship has empowered countless students to explore their creativity and push the boundaries of ceramic art.

In addition to showcasing the works of scholarship recipients, the exhibition will also pay homage to the rich history of Cowan Pottery and its impact on American ceramic art. From its humble beginnings in Lakewood, Ohio, to its recognition as a leading producer of artistic pottery, Cowan Pottery remains a symbol of artistic excellence and innovation.
