July 23rd will officially mark the 100-year anniversary of the Emerald Necklace. To celebrate, this month the Cleveland Metroparks will host a number of centennial events and feature special centennial items as a way for the community to help mark the celebration.
“We only turn 100 once. Together with the Northeast Ohio community, we look forward to honoring Cleveland Metroparks past and celebrating the future throughout the month of July,” says CEO Brian Zimmerman.
Next week, guests to Edgewater Park can be part of Cleveland Metroparks legacy, snapping photos at the living billboard, sponsored by MTD. The aluminum and steel structure, standing 8 feet tall, will be installed near the new Edgewater Beach House. Shaped like the outer ring of the Park District’s Centennial Seal, the living billboard is planted with nearly 800 sedum plants. The living billboard was designed, built and will be maintained entirely by Cleveland Metroparks staff. Guests are encouraged the share their living billboard pictures using #GrowInCLE.
Several centennial events throughout the month will pay homage to the history and evolution of the Park District:
- The July 8 rededication of A.B. Williams Memorial Woods, site of the first trailside museum, will showcase the improved Sylvan Loop Trail and new connector bridge.
- The rededication of the Stinchcomb-Groth Memorial on July 19 will honor the beginning of Cleveland Metroparks. The memorial pays tribute to the first two directors of Cleveland Metroparks. The event will feature a concert on the Park District’s original three acres.
- Celebrate with a bang at Cleveland Metroparks free Centennial Fireworks Celebration presented by KeyBank on July 22 at Edgewater Park. The free community event will feature live music, food trucks and entertainment leading up to the custom choreographed fireworks show at dusk.
- Closing out the month-long celebration is a concert at Bedford Reservation on July 30, part of the Centennial Concert Series presented by KeyBank.

For $49.95, customers who purchase the book will receive a free Cleveland Metroparks blanket, perfect for a picnic in the park. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Centennial Forests Fund.
This month, a limited edition commemorative Pathfinder will be available free-of-charge to guests at Cleveland Metroparks nature centers and events.
