Perhaps I am spending too much time thinking about textures. But when you create a focus and the word of the/my year is “texture,” you celebrate this continued attention to detail. It’s also a lovely reminder that, despite having multiple “tabs” open in my head, I can focus—and complete—one project a week.
And so, we move on to Week 4. Four weeks of The Texture Project = eight new experiences (bonus info for you!) and eight reflections for me.
To the new readers, here’s the basics… Upon the new year, I launched The Texture Project. More than a goal or resolution, it is a way of looking at each day, each week—purposely curating new experiences and opportunities. I started the new year with a sandpaper scrubbing, moved to a polyester blend reflection, and well, now, here’s to stainless steel. Why stainless steel? Cool to the touch (note: I am writing this with the temperature at 1 degree F), and defined as minimal, controlled, and calm—this texture best describes this week’s adventure.
Week 4: The Texture Project
Experience #1: Chapin Forest Reservation
Location: Kirtland, Ohio
Why it added texture: The choice last Sunday morning was gym, yoga, or bundle up and head outside. Ridiculously cold, it seemed like the worst of the options, but with groomed trails (you can also cross-country ski and snowshoe!), it was simply magical.
Who it’s good for: Everyone. And did you know you can visit at night? A mile of trail lights (Hobart entrance) makes for magic in these darkest days of winter.
Takeaway tip: Seek out the Sharon Conglomerate ledges, from which Lake Erie and the Cleveland skyline are visible on a clear day. You can find this overlook by entering the trail from either park entrance, and it’s definitely worth the walk.
Experience #2: Maggie’s Donuts
Location: Seven locations… I chose to visit the location in Kirtland.
Why it added texture: Following the Chapin Reservation adventure, I spotted Maggie’s Donuts tucked into a little plaza right off Route 306. I’ve heard about the donuts, and though I am a lover of donuts, I’m also a lover of many other sweet treats and try to consume all in moderation—so I often pass on something so decadent in the morning when I know later in the day there will be more sweet treats in my future. But I was curious. My husband and I opted for one cream stick and one croissant (at the recommendation of one of the fabulous team members working). And wow. Wow. Wow. This donut was—dare I say—extraordinary.
Who it’s good for: It’s not. Donuts are bad. But these donuts were absolutely delicious.
Takeaway tip: Eat the donuts. Occasionally.
And that’s a wrap… Week 4/8 experiences… like stainless steel: solid, calm, and controlled. I’ll take it.
A reminder: Texture is simply the inspiration, the prompt, for paying more attention. For noticing the small stuff that adds interest to life. Perhaps nothing has changed but the perspective—and sometimes, that is all that is needed to change in order to add more joy and gratitude.
