The Texture Project – Week 6: Roller Skates & Yoga Mats

- in Uncategorized

Week of the New Year. How are your resolutions holding up? I’ve been a fan of vision boards, lists of goals, and other shiny plans for the future, but this year I’ve simplified. It’s all about one word: texture. Choosing my calm (and joy) in a world of chaos, controlling what I can, and finding gratitude and some fun. Looking for some of these things in your life? Here are two Northeast Ohio adventures that just may add texture to your life, too!

Week 5: The Texture Project

Experience #1: Chagrin Valley Roller Rink
Location: Chagrin Falls, Ohio

Why it added texture: I put on those roller skates and become my best 10-year-old self. It’s easy to become badass in a pair of skates, zooming around a polished hardwood floor, trying to keep up with the actual 10-year-olds. The bonus was not taking a tumble (yes, proud moment) and getting to partake in all the roller skating traditional games like the Hokey Pokey and the “Chicken Dance.” And who can beat this date night out? $7 for admission and $4 for skate rental?

Who it’s good for: Everyone. Date night, family fun…the old, the young, and even the teens. Chagrin Valley Roller Rink uses the tagline “let the good times roll.” It’s true!

Takeaway tip: Chagrin Falls can feel pretty enchanting and is a great little mini escape. We booked an early dinner at Crumb and Spigot and landed the $10 pizza deal. And, due to the early dinner, we had time to take in Fireside Bookshop and Jeni’s Ice Cream.

Experience #2: Gentle Yin–All Levels Yoga
Location: Harmony Yoga (Willoughby)

Why it added texture: If you’re thinking yoga is like a bad game of Twister, perhaps you are not in the right room. Melanie Hale, a teacher at Harmony Yoga, provides a Gentle Yin–All Levels Yoga class that offers the needed space, direction, and peace that fills my bucket right up on a Sunday morning. Breathing, stretching, moving—with no distractions—clears the chaos and increases the calm.

Who it’s good for: Adults. My teenage daughter has attended, but it’s slow and quiet…and often too early for teens to find their way to a mat. Still, I do recommend it.

Takeaway tip: Even my husband—five years older (and wiser) and a little less flexible—keeps showing up. It’s a lovely Sunday morning date that gives us both time and space, together.

A reminder: If you’re thinking, I wish I had time to add some texture to your life, check out this podcast. Taking time will make you take notice. Taking notice of time makes time.
