Dyslexia-Inclusive Children’s Book Initiative in Cuyahoga County Libraries

The Northern Ohio Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (NOBIDA) announced the expansion of its literacy initiative, Until Everyone Can Read: Children’s Books Representing Dyslexic Readers, to public libraries in Cuyahoga County.

As an all-volunteer, working board, NOBIDA is dedicated to offering hope, education, and the opportunity for personal success to people with dyslexia and those who interact with them. NOBIDA serves the community through providing education, professional development, resources, and outreach rooted in evidence-based literacy practices

Dyslexia is a common learning difference that can make reading and spelling difficult and may impact vocabulary and reading comprehension over time. The International Dyslexia Association estimates that as many as 1 in 5 people show signs of dyslexia.

Through this initiative, each participating library will receive children’s books featuring characters with dyslexia, along with nonfiction titles that explain how learning to read works in child-friendly ways. In addition, NOBIDA will provide caregiver resources to support shared family reading experiences.

Newly participating libraries include:

Fulton–Cleveland Public Library Woodland–Cleveland Public Library

Garden Valley–Cleveland Public Library Euclid Public Library

They join Fairport Harbor Public Library and Madison Public Library in Lake County, which received initiative materials earlier this summer.

Libraries are powerful community spaces where children discover books that shape how they see themselves and others. NOBIDA is grateful to be working with library partners to help ensure more children have access to books where they feel seen, supported, and understood. NOBIDA encourages families to explore these books through their local participating libraries and to use the accompanying resources to learn more about literacy acquisition.
