Chagrin Valley Farms’ (Bainbridge Twp.) summer horse-lovers camps are designed for riders with an interest in developing hunt seat riding and horsemanship skills at Northeast Ohio’s leading equestrian center. Nine weekly sessions run Monday through Friday from June 3 to August 9.
Camp combines the physical exercise of horseback riding with the responsibility of caring for horses within a safe environment. Campers enjoy riding lessons, interactive horse activities and educational games. They will learn about the basics of horse care and grooming, tack and equipment and barn safety, in addition to their daily riding lesson. Equine professionals and guest speakers have included veterinarians, farriers and saddle fitters.
LEVEL 1 (9 a.m. to Noon): Beginner/Intro to Horses for 5 to 7-year-olds
Our youngest campers will spend a half day at the Farm and activities will include a riding lesson with assistance as needed, basic educational sessions focused on introducing children to horses, safety and horse care, as well as fun horse-related activities. Price: $275 per week
LEVEL 2 (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.): Beginner/Intermediate for 7 to 10-year-olds
Campers will ride in one group lesson in addition to non-riding sessions with speakers on horsemanship topics, as well as fun equestrian-related activities designed to expand horse care experience. Price: $395 per week
LEVEL 3 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.): Upper Intermediate/Advanced for 10-year-olds and older
Our level 3 campers will ride twice a day with advanced programming geared toward simulated horse ownership and knowledge. Our advanced campers will be hands on with daily horse care tasks and will also be exposed to other disciplines such as dressage. Price: $550 per week
Early camp experience has lasting impact
When CWRU medical student Olivia DeMartini applied to Ohio State University her application included stories of how Chagrin Valley Farms helped her grow. She began riding at CVF summer camp at 9. “From that first summer to about age 20, I spent summers at CVF and transitioned from camper, to assistant, to camp counselor. Without a doubt it helped shape me into the person I am today,” she said.
“I would absolutely recommend the camp program to any parent as the lessons their children will learn are truly invaluable. You learn how to be brave to overcome your fears; you become more compassionate and self-aware because every action counts when working with horses and children; and you learn how to be confident because it is the only way to successfully lead your horse (just to name a few),” said Olivia.
