Sometimes it feels like grandparents give too much and there’s no “gift” that is worthy of all they do. From babysitting our kids to lending a shoulder to cry on, their support of our kids is usually unmatched.
So what do you get for the grandparents who have everything? Here’s some budget-friendly ideas:
Take Them to Holiday Lights
There are plenty of walking paths and drive-through opportunities to see holiday lights. Several of the park systems, botanical gardens and zoos in Northeast Ohio are hosting extravagant holiday displays, along with some costumed visitors.
Extra Tips: Book soon, as tickets typically sell out fast for these events. Check with grandparents about how they want to see the lights. If you are viewing by car, bring holiday treats and encourage grandparents to share stories of their past holidays.
Get the Gear to Cheer
Many grandparents are sitting on the sidelines at every game or match for your son or daughter’s youth sports activities. This year, get them something to wear to the games to make them feel like part of the team family.
Extra Tips: To go with the gear, give grandparents extra photos of your kids playing or have your kids autograph a ball, etc. Encourage grandparents to share their own youth sports stories.
Give Them an Updated Family Photo
Book a family photo session with a photographer or take your own and add it to a new frame. Grandparents appreciate new photos (especially if they’re not on social media). Digital photo frames allow families to send photos from their devices directly to the frame all year long.
Extra Tips: If you are not up for a family photo, just make it about the kids. There are also plenty of craft frames where the kids can get creative and make it extra special.
Handmade Fun
Take the time to have your kids make handmade cards, ornaments, handprints, poems and gifts.
Extra Tips:Let the kids be themselves: so if it’s silly or messy, the grandparents won’t mind.
For Grandparents Who Are Away
Unfortunately, grandparents aren’t always able to make it to the holiday festivities and they might appreciate gifts that hit closer to home. Find their favorite neighborhood restaurant and get a gift card, or donate to their favorite charity. Send care packages to grandparents who are in a nursing home, hospitalized or need to stay away due to medical concerns.
Extra Tips: Send a video of the kids opening presents or have the kids give them a personalized holiday message. Find ways to make them feel special even if they aren’t in town or can’t make it due to special circumstances.
Care Package Item Ideas: Non-slip socks, lip balm, lotion, soft blankets, large print books and new family photos.
