Moths and Meteors Overnight at Observatory Park from Geauga Park District

Make it a tradition and spend the night in your Observatory Park for the annual Perseids Meteor Shower, featuring special appearances by the park’s amazing nocturnal wildlife of summer. Observatory Park to be open all night for annual meteor shower

All ages are invited to lay back and enjoy this natural all-night spectacular at Ohio’s only International Dark Sky Park on Wednesday, August 12, to Thursday, August 13 – 8:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. at Observatory Park, 10610 Clay Street, Montville Twp.

No formal program will be held, but a naturalist and other astronomers will be on hand to answer questions and point out other interesting objects in the summer sky.

Though the shower is forecast to be at its most intense in the after-midnight hours of 1 to 3 a.m., observers should be able to catch sight of meteors for several days as the Earth drifts through the path of comet Switft-Tuttle.

Please dress warmly and pack some bug spray, something warm to drink, a reclining lawn chair and some blankets for your evening.  If you’d like to camp, you may also bring your own tent.

Nothing happening in the heavens at the moment? Visit our black-light or mercury vapor lamps to help sample and survey night-flying moths and other nocturnal insects attracted since it got dark. Overnighters will be welcome to check the light stations anytime all night long!

Now if only we could predict the weather! A chart of the skies over Observatory Park can always be found at http://bit.ly/gpdop under the Dark Sky Park tab.

Observatory Park is wheelchair/stroller accessible. Call 440-286-9516 with questions.
