Great Lakes Science Center Offers Extra Outdoor Rocketry Fun

The giant “green roof” of Great Lakes Science Center’s parking garage will feature some extra STEM activities over Labor Day weekend, including rockets, chemistry and a fruit flying summer finale.

Two rocketry activities will take place outside from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, and Monday, Sept. 7, and from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6. Experiment with paper rockets and test their flight capabilities in an aerodynamic engineering challenge using air pressure; and use a chemical reaction to launch a film canister in a chemistry and rockets activity.

Watch in wonder as GLSC staff explores forces and motion to move, lift and launch objects through the air, sometimes with explosive results, in a special outdoor Big Science Show at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The big finale on Monday at 1:15 p.m. is a chemical reaction that will send the fruit flying when staff blows up a watermelon!
