As parents, we’ve probably all been — or will be — there. You’re expecting anywhere from two to a dozen kids to descend upon your home for a playdate, sleepover or birthday party. Aside from food and the usual toys, you’re scrambling to come up with something unique and fun that will keep them busy for more than 15 minutes.
Enter CraftyBags, the modern parent’s solution to crafty entertainment for kids. Founded by Northeast Ohio resident Erin Castaneda, the company provides easy crafts for kids in a convenient way for parents. Castaneda comes up with the ideas, shops for the needed supplies, you visit craftybagsco.com to place an order, and everything you need — including a CraftyBag for each child to take their craft home — arrives at your doorstep. Party and playdate entertainment are done, with just a few clicks of a button.
“The idea came from conversations I had with friends who were parents,” Castaneda recalls. “Talking about upcoming birthday parties or sleepovers, I kept hearing two consistent themes: I don’t have the time to run around and shop and research a craft; and how do I keep kids busy at these parties. That’s how CraftyBags was formed — I thought it would be so easy and convenient, since everyone does everything online anyway, to just jump online and pick a craft. I send everything to you. All you have to do is open the box and follow the instructions.”
Along the lines of curbside grocery pickup or meal kit delivery services, Castaneda says CraftyBags offers parents convenience, in addition to saving money.
“If you were to buy half of the craft supplies on your own, you’d be left with extra of everything — and you might not ever use it,” she explains, adding that each craft is sold in units of four per order, so everything is rationed out and customers receive exactly what they need for four kids to complete the craft.
Currently, there are nine crafts from which to choose; Castaneda’s goal is to add two more each month, in addition to seasonal crafts for all the major holidays. Mostly gender neutral, the craft kits range in price from $10.99 to $25.99. Each includes step-by-step instructions with pictures.
“I want to offer different price points to fit the consumer’s budget; plus if parents are planning a fairly large party, I want it to be economical for them,” Castaneda says.
Though she started the company two years ago, “life kind of happened” along the way (marriage and two kids), and the CraftyBags brand only recently began growing.
“Now that I’m a parent, I understand the lack of time involved when you have children,” Castaneda says. “I will do anything that’s convenient for me as a parent — CraftyBags brings that convenience concept to crafts and children’s entertainment.”
