Brain growth in the early years of life occurs at an astounding pace. At birth, the human brain contains about 100 billion cells not yet connected into functioning networks; by age 3, a child’s brain has formed 1 trillion connections!
Brain connections formed during the early years of life become the foundation for a child’s thinking and learning. The development of these connections is shaped by a child’s early experiences.
Here are some things that parents and family members can do to enhance a child’s brain development:
Love
- Lots of love and affection are the most important things you can do to promote emotional and cognitive growth. You cannot love your baby too much!
A Safe Environment
- Your baby needs to feel safe and secure. When a baby feels stress, brain development can be slowed down.
- Predictable daily routines help your baby learn what to expect from the world.
Enriching Experiences
- Talk, Read, Explore.
- Routine daily activities can help build your baby’s brain.
