The parent-child bond grows through everyday caregiving, no matter the age of your child. In the early days (and years) of parenthood, however, there are some behaviors you can practice to actively promote the development of a bond. Because every child is different, there is no magic formula, but a few things can help the process along.

- Touching in soothing ways (stroking, patting)
- Speaking in a reassuring voice when the child is distressed
- Rocking or cuddling when the child is crying
- Singing
- Holding close
- Encouraging and praising

Responding
- Looking at the child when communicating
- Focusing on the child when caring for him or her
- Playing with the child
- Responding to the child’s communication cues
- Laughing with the child
- Doing things at the child’s pace
- Making funny sounds or actions to amuse the child
