This may be completely obvious and old-hat to many of you but I have discovered a new way of keeping my kids entertained in the car — and it’s completely screen-free.
I don’t even remember when we stumbled upon this exactly, but a few months ago, one of my kids wandered into the kids’ audiobook section and asked what they were. After what I’m sure was an awkward explanation about it being like someone reading you a book with voices, I helped my 7-year-old pick out an appropriate book and we gave it a try.
The result was magical, golden, enraptured silence… for my 7-year-old. My 5-year-old wasn’t as into it. So we went back to the children’s audiobook aisle and grabbed some of the books on CD, the ones with where they read the story and then make a ding sound when you should turn the page.
I know, some of you are now pretty sure I’ve been living under a rock, but I’ve never really used those with my kids before, either. My 5-year-old is now in love with them. I think having the book to look at helps him to focus and many of the books on CD are geared toward younger children, whereas the audiobooks are often longer and geared toward older kids.
Now when we spend any significant amount of time in the car, I try to have an audiobook for my older son and a few books on CD for my younger son. They get to take turns listening to their books and I couldn’t be happier as it’s blissfully quiet and they are not arguing or complaining about being bored.
Have you tried audiobooks or books on CD with your little ones? Have any favorites?
