Simply Summer — Editor’s Note July 2017

Simply Summer — Editor’s Note July 2017

- in Parenting

“Can I get something from the concession stand?” is something my boys often ask, whether we are at a ball game, a local festival or even on rainy days at the movie theater. I can’t help but giggle when they try to reason their way out of eating the food I packed.

In summer, we are out and about, and we tend to indulge in various edible treats — including ice cream. Because of this, we thought we’d provide reasons for readers to slurp up the flavors from popular scoop shops around the region, and try out a great homemade recipe (pg. 21).

July is always one of my favorite calendar months, but it’s also one of my favorite issues of Northeast Ohio Parent. This is the time when we showcase our Parent Choice Awards (pg. 26)  and Cover Kids contest winners and runners-up (pg.16). What a tough decision we had on the Cover Kids, as there were so many wonderful entries! I want to personally say thanks to all our readers who took time to submit photos of their kids for the contest.

This issue, we also feature our Northeast Ohio Parent bloggers — moms and dads who have diverse insights, including full-time professionals, stay-at-home parents, food experts, local adventure seekers and more. Check out our lineup on pg. 38.

Summer feels like it’s just heating up, so we wanted to provide you with some safety tips (see lawnmower injury awareness on pg. 9 and hot car dangers on pg. 12). We also cover some summer traditions, from setting up your kids’ first lemonade stand to creating a scavenger hunt.

Summer is pretty simple around my house. The kids — and my lucky teacher husband — can sleep in, eat breakfast late, and go to the pool or ball fields, while mom plugs away at her work computer. For those, like me, who also are ready for a summer vacation, we provide some travel apps you don’t want to miss (pg. 14)

Finally, why do I give in and buy my boys a snack or a coveted sports drink during a family outing or at the local sports hotspot? All I can say is it’s a mom thing — and sometimes I want something different to eat, too.

Have a great July, everyone!
