Happy? New Year. Yes, happy? Happiness is the journey, not the destination, right? When, where, and how I am happy—dare I say content—is the ongoing battle. And not just mine, but I see it all over my Insta feed. Of course, when you are looking for happiness, those algorithms find you.
A few weeks ago, I jumped into The Texture Project. More than a goal or resolution, it is a way of looking at each day, each week…purposely curating new experiences and opportunities. From last week’s sandpaper scrubbing, which definitely added “texture” to my life, to this week’s softer, cozier mixed bag—dare I say cotton-poly blend—I’m describing this week’s texture as the beloved polyester blend. Known for its moderate comfort, this week’s wintry weather gave bonus time for reflection, and the return to school for my college-age girl gave me the “open door” to say yes to some new adventures too.
Week 3: The Texture Project
Experience #1: Pilates
Location: Club Pilates
Why it added texture: Reformers. I’ve always been reformer-curious, but the opportunity to actually try one out definitely heightened all the senses. First sense: fear. As in, “Will I be able to work this contraption without making a total fool of myself or getting tangled in the series of straps and pulley systems?”
Who it’s good for: Everyone. Damn it. Yes, we all need to move more, and it seems exercise is a secret sauce for good health.
Takeaway tip: First class is free…so why not add some texture (or adventure) to your life too?
Experience #2: Stereophic at Playhouse Square
Location: Playhouse Square, downtown Cleveland
Why it added texture: If you are looking for the feel-good show that leaves you singing, optimistic, and happy, this probably isn’t the experience you are seeking. In fact, when I shared I was heading to this show in Cleveland’s beloved theater district, I heard plenty of reasons to pass on this experience. A listen to Broadway Buzz prepared me—and saved me—and I walked away from the show with an introspective artistic journey.
Who it’s good for: Definitely older teens and adults. Kids would lose interest in seconds (and, as a parent with kids in tow, you will lose your mind), plus you might have some explaining to do if you take your child to see folks snorting cocaine on stage.
Takeaway tip: Education, preparation, and understanding the context of an experience is a game changer.
And that’s a wrap…three weeks, six unique new experiences…adding and reflecting on the textures that make life a little more interesting.
A reminder:
What texture are you adding to your life this week?
