In one of my friend groups, I’m the only mom, so I often get asked for gift ideas when someone is shopping for a family with preschoolers or toddlers. And while my kids LOVE nearly any present that they get, there are some gifts they can use that are more than just another stuffed animal or plastic toy. If you’re looking for a somewhat unique gift for the next 2-, 3- or 4-year-old’s birthday party you attend, here are some ideas. (Note: I suggest talking with the parents before buying anything; you never know what they may already have or need.)
For the family who loves to read: magazine or book subscription
When I was growing up, my grandmother got me a magazine subscription to Highlights. It was the gift that kept on giving, and each month I looked forward to my magazine in the mail. Highlights also has magazines for kids of all ages, starting with Hello (for ages 0-2) and High Five (ages 2-6). There also are plenty of book subscriptions out there to give as gifts — even Amazon has one where kids get 2-4 books each delivery!
For the family who doesn’t need any more toys: the essentials
Take it from me, kids at this age love any and all gifts. Have you seen the video of the kid unwrapping a banana and being ecstatic? My kids are the same. If you can’t think of anything to get the kids but still want to give them something, try wrapping up things you know they’ll use — eventually. Some ideas? Bubble bath, toothpaste, toothbrushes, kiddie cups and silverware, etc. This also can be a pretty budget-friendly gift, too.
For the family who never sits still: local museum/zoo membership
Find out which local facility the family loves, and get them a membership or few passes, depending on your budget. We go to the local history museum and zoo so often that we get a membership each year — ask the parent where they go the most and gift them with a way to go for free.
For the family who loves their movies: Disney+ subscription
Know a kid who can quote all the words in “Frozen”? Or sing all the songs in “The Lion King”? See if they have a Disney+ subscription. If not, this may be the perfect gift for them and the whole family. You can purchase a gift subscription and the family can activate it on their device(s) when they’re ready.
For the family who is saving up: contribution to their education fund
We LOVE it when people donate to our kids’ education funds. It’s a win-win for all; for for the gift-giver, it is easy (the family can usually send you a link), and the parents appreciate it, knowing it’s going to get put to good use.
For the family who has it all (and the parent who could use a break): a playdate
This is not only budget-friendly, but it’s fun, too! Offer to spend a few hours — or a day — with the child. There are plenty of cheap/free things you can do (my favorites freebies? Bake cookies, go to a playground, visit and play at the local library, run around the art museum, etc.) and the parents will definitely appreciate a break.
