White After Labor Day? Totally Acceptable!

- in 2014 Editions

It is no longer summer here in Northeast Ohio.  Nope, no matter what the meteorological calendar says, Labor Day has come and gone. The kids are back in school and if history is any indicator, we will soon experience a massive wave of heat and humidity.  And I’ll just bet that you have heard at least one person utter the phrase, “Don’t wear white after Labor Day”. I realize this rule may be a bit passé these days, but c’mon, don’t you pause just a teeny-tiny bit as you reach for a pair of white shorts after Labor Day? Ok, fine, I do.

Well, I am here today to tell you all, along with the world of wine, white is absolutely fine after Labor Day. And by that I mean that it’s totally acceptable to DRINK white after Labor Day. I don’t really care what color you are or aren’t wBe. Pinot Grigio wine labelearing.  (What a wonderful world, huh?)

I recently came across Be. Pinot Grigio (2013, 12.5%, Napa, California).  I will admit to being intrigued by the labels on this line of wines: the word “Be.” followed by a word such as “flirty”, “tempting”, or “chic”. I wasn’t really feeling any of these that day, but then I saw “bright” on the bottle of Pinot Grigio. I could be bright. Or, this wine could be bright for me. Either one worked. So I bought some.

This wine will give you a whiff of green apples, limes and pears when you first sniff it. You’ll taste some citrus flavors like grapefruit and lime and then surprisingly, you’ll get a little tinge of honey on the end of it all. The honey really softened up the crispness of the citrus in a nice way. It made the wine feel round and almost plush in my mouth. Bright? Yes. But not bright in an in-your-face-flash-of-big-white-light way. More like a nice-soft-illuminating-the-room way.

Drink Be. Pinot Grigio if you like a white wine that isn’t totally sweet, but isn’t big and oakey either. This Pinot Grigio is a nice blend of tart and sweet and will go with lots of different foods. I found it at my favorite big box store that you pronounce with a French accent for less than $8 a bottle. So not only can you drink white after Labor Day, you don’t have to spend a lot to do it, either!

Cheers!
