Acting Out Stress: How Project DRAMA Helps Kids Cope Through Creativity

Let’s face it, it’s tough being a kid these days and sometimes the stress of school and just being a kid can feel overwhelming. But, an exciting program at Case Western Reserve University can help kids to reduce their stress, connect with other kids, and get in touch with their creative side.

Project DRAMA, a program being conducted by Case Western Reserve University researchers, aims to discover whether different forms of the arts can help to reduce anxiety and sad mood in children and adolescents. The study compares three forms of the arts: (a) improvisation, a form of theater in which group members collaborate to spontaneously create a scene and dialogue, (b) improvisation plus wellness techniques, such as relaxation and facing fears, and (c) a social crafts group where children and adolescents get to know one another as they work together on crafts.

The program is the brainchild of two faculty at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Amy Przeworski, an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences and Chris Bohan, a member of the Department of Theater who specializes in improvisation. The two joined up to create a program where kids can channel their stress, anxiety and sad mood into the arts and have fun getting to know other local area kids. The program is funded by grants from CWRU and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Children and teens between the ages of 8-17 who experience high stress, anxiety, or sad mood may take part in the project. The program takes place on the CWRU campus with groups starting soon. To learn more about the program go to: https://psychsciences.case.edu/project-drama/
