Social anxiety will affect all of us at some point or another. However, when it begins to take over your life completely, it can be crippling. So much so that you start to find simple things like speaking on the phone or going to the shop so overwhelming you can’t bear it. And, when it gets to this point, it’s more important than ever to try and overcome your fears and anxieties so that you can get your mental health back on the right track.
First things first, it’s important to mention that your first step should always be seeking medical advice. Even if you don’t want to go down the route of medication, there are lots of other ways you can help overcome your social anxiety. And, it’s important to remember that no matter how small and insignificant your problems may seem, they are completely valid. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some ways to overcome social anxiety so you can continue living life to the full.
Take baby steps
A recommendation that many people hear from loved ones is to “throw yourself in at the deep end” when it comes to facing social anxiety. And, while this can and does work for many people, building that initial courage might be more of a hindrance than a help.
Instead of rushing to do things that you feel anxious about, take baby steps. This could be by being in a large group of people you’re familiar with rather than complete strangers. It’s especially helpful if those people have some knowledge of what you’re trying to overcome.
Overcoming your fear with people you know and trust will make the journey to recovery much easier, and set you up for the next step in battling your social anxiety.
Try a new hobby
Trying a new hobby is a great way of exposing yourself to your social anxiety because not only is it a positive step in the right direction, you’re also having fun and learning new skills. Here are some ideas for hobbies you could take up that don’t require an overwhelming amount of social interaction:
- Take up chess. Chess is a game that requires you to think strategically and logically, and in general, doesn’t require a lot of talking. This is a great option for those that might want to start small and work their way up to creating conversation with their opponents. Again, you could play chess with someone familiar but in an unfamiliar place, or you could opt to join a chess club and go from there.
- Join a book club. Reading is an incredible way of taking the mind away from the world for a while, and joining a book club will help your social anxiety because you can either listen to people’s opinions and thoughts, or take part when you feel comfortable enough. Plus, who doesn’t want to read more books?!
- Try a yoga class. Yoga is a fantastic release for those experiencing symptoms of anxiety, and it’s a really good workout too! What’s even better, is that it’s a club that will require peace and quiet. Over time, you can begin to feel more comfortable in a social setting, and make new friends too!
- While this one might not necessarily be a social group you join, picking up a camera and exploring to take pictures is a brilliant way of relaxing your mind. It’s good exercise, and if you choose to share your pictures online, you might find the comments or sales on your artwork helps you overcome a bit more of your social anxiety!
Research treatment
As mentioned earlier, there are lots of treatments for anxiety, so it’s important to do your research to find which one might suit you best. If it’s a medical treatment, your Doctor will have to prescribe it, but more often than not, Doctors are willing to at least hear you out when it comes to discussing treatments.
The type of treatment you end up with will depend on the severity of your social anxiety, but it could be anything from cognitive behavioral therapy to finding a reliable ketamine provider for fast relief. Speak to your Doctor and don’t be afraid to ask questions about each treatment and how it will impact your life.
Learn to love yourself again
Self confidence plays a huge part in social anxiety, so perhaps one area to focus on is loving yourself again. Those who feel more self conscious are less likely to put themselves out there in social situations.
Take good care of yourself. This means eating well and getting enough exercise. It’s easy to have a cheat meal or skip the run you were meant to go on, but ultimately, the opposite is hindering you.
You should also take the time to accentuate your natural beauty. This might mean getting your hair done or having your teeth whitened but overall, if you like what you see in the mirror, you’re naturally going to feel more confident when facing the outside world.
Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want
Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. This can be applicable in a few situations. For example, if you’ve found a treatment that you’d like to try, don’t be afraid to ask for it! The worst that’s going to happen is your Doctor will explain why it’s probably not the best route for you right now.
Another good example is if you’re eating out at a restaurant and need something from the waiter/waitress. Remember that they are there to serve you and that if you don’t ask, you won’t get! Even if that means starting small by asking for a sauce packet or a napkin and working your way up, you’re taking healthy steps to overcome your social anxiety.
Social anxiety is no song and dance, but it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road for you. There are lots of steps you can take to overcome your anxieties and start healing! Good luck!
