Anxiety is something that affects all of us at one point in our lives. It’s not something you can predict when it will happen, but it could come at any point, and this could be due to many reasons. It could be down to work stress, it could be down to your home life, or it could be because you aren’t feeling very well.
When you are feeling anxious, it’s good to be aware of it and to then find ways to deal with it (and this article could be your first step). There isn’t a cure, but to manage it, there are a few things you can do, and this includes looking after your diet, getting plenty of rest and ensuring you’re exercising.
Keep on reading for our brief guide on three tips to help you manage anxiety.
Look into medical alternatives
Seeking professional guidance is key when you need extra help managing anxiety. A professional can advise on a range of effective strategies, from established therapeutic practices to changes in lifestyle. This could involve exploring options like therapy and implementing coping strategies to help curb negative thoughts before they escalate. Many people find success with lifestyle changes, such as adopting mindfulness meditation, or incorporating practices like yoga and jogging. For some individuals, a professional may also discuss medical marijuana as a potential option that may offer some benefits.
Pay attention to your diet
Diet can play a big part in how you feel, and if you find your anxiety is spiralling, one of the first things you can do is take a look at what you’re eating and drinking. Make sure you always eat breakfast, and include something with protein to give you as much energy as possible. Eat complex carbohydrates as these are said to raise serotonin in the brain and help you feel calmer. Stay away from sugary food and drink as this can cause spikes and crashes with your sugar levels and make you feel worse. Drink plenty of water and try to limit alcohol and caffeine to a minimum, avoiding completely if you can.
Get plenty of rest
You’ll be amazed at the number of things that can happen when you don’t get enough sleep and rest. Sleep is so important for your overall health, and when you don’t get enough, this is when you can start to feel more stressed, anxious, risk getting ill, etc. The recommended amount of sleep that you should be having daily should be around 7-9 hours – the exact amount varies with age. Do you think you are getting this, or should you be putting steps in place to rest more? There is plenty of tech out there that you can use to track your sleep, if you haven’t done this before.
