‘Above and Beyond’ exhibit at the Science Center Closes January 2

Great Lakes Science Center’s current special exhibition, Above and Beyond presented by Parker Aerospace, has been taking guests into the future of aerospace technology and travel with unprecedented interactive demonstrations since it opened in the fall. If you haven’t yet experienced it with your family, there’s still time before its final countdown to lift-off from Cleveland on January 2.

Within the exhibition, guests are able to step into a simulated space elevator that takes them to the edge of the universe, design and test a supersonic jet to face off in a virtual high-speed flying competition, experience a flight simulation with motion-sensing technology to get a sense of what it’s like to fly like a bird, and discover concepts for future aircraft.

Balance out your trip to the future with a voyage to the past by adding a screening of our newest Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater film, “Dinosaurs of Antarctica,” to your visit! From the Permian through the Jurassic, journey to the south polar landscapes of Antarctica hundreds of millions of years ago. Roam the primitive forests and thick swamps with bizarre dinosaurs and colossal amphibians. Enter a surreal world of bug-eyed giants and egg-laying mammals — where survival means enduring the sunless, six-month polar winter surrounded by meat-eaters with night vision.

“Dinosaurs of Antarctica” was produced by Giant Screen Films. Major funding was provided by the National Science Foundation. Visit GreatScience.com for showtimes.

After the last day of Above and Beyond, the Science Center will be closed to the public for two weeks in early January to allow several maintenance projects to proceed without affecting the guest experience, and to provide the staff a break following the busy holiday season. The affected dates will be Monday, January 3, through Friday, January 14.

During the closure, the Science Center will be performing significant maintenance on its escalators, replacing carpeting in the classroom areas of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s MC2STEM high school on the promenade level, and disassembling and loading out the exhibition Above and Beyond.

In prior years, scheduled maintenance closing periods have taken place in either early January or early September following the end of the busy summer season and Memorial Day weekend.

The Science Center appreciates the patience of guests and members as it makes improvements to the building.
The Science Center is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The Science Center is closed Mondays and Tuesdays and for all home day Browns games. The Science Center is open special hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, December 27, and on Tuesday, December 28.
