In partnership with Rotary Club of Kent and Talk On Speech-Language Therapy, Main Street Kent presents the Dragon’s Merry Christmas Story Walk. This is a fun, family-friendly activity promoting literacy, fresh air and community.
All are invited to head downtown to read Dragon’s Merry Christmas by Day Pilkey in the business windows of downtown Kent, enjoying shopping, fresh air, treats and warm beverages along the way. This edition of the Story Walk will run through Dec. 27. Talk On has added picture-based summary sentences to each page to add visual support and increase access for those who use augmentative and alternative communication methods.
The Story Walk begins at Kent Natural Foods Co-op (151 E. Main St.). Printed maps are available, or the map can be downloaded at mainstreetkent.org/events/story-walk-kent. Each window display will indicate the next business to visit to continue reading the story.
Donations of warm clothing will be collected inside each business as we join Dragon’s mission to help keep his friends warm. (Read the story to learn more.) Items will be donated to Kent City Schools. Kent Free Library will offer a “take and make” ornament craft throughout the time period too, while supplies last.
“We’re excited to work with Rotary Club of Kent and Talk On Speech Language Therapy so we can continue bringing Story Walks to the Kent community,” Main Street Kent executive director Heather Malarcik says. “We all have great interest in enhancing literacy and community, so it’s been great working together. With kids being home for holiday break, and people having lots of shopping to do, this will be a nice opportunity to get out and do something fun, productive, and helpful to others.”
