Did you know: A herptile is another term for reptiles and amphibians?
Learn more about those herptiles – which surely you just learned was a term! – at Penitentiary Glen Reservation’s Hungry Hungry Herps event on Aug. 25 from 12-4 p.m. The event is billed as a fun and hands-on opportunity to learn about herptiles (herps) and the important role they play in the interconnected world around us.
Attendees will have the chance to look for cold-blooded critters alongside Lake Metroparks naturalists, scouring under logs for salamanders, wading through ponds to catch frogs and searching streams for water snakes. Habitat hunts and sustainable crafts as well as various other interactive exhibits and activities will also be available, including a fun take on the Hungry Hungry Hippos game.
Additionally, the Herps Alive Foundation will be present at the event, allowing guests to have up-close encounters with various reptiles and amphibians that have been rehabilitated by the organization. Several furry and feathery animal ambassadors from the Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center will also be featured during live animal training and enrichment sessions.
Miniature train rides will be offered courtesy of the Lake Shore Live Steamers, weather permitting. For safety reasons, pregnant women are not permitted to ride the trains. Children must sit on their own, no lap sitting permitted. No registration required.
The event is free for all ages.
