Cleveland Metroparks Zoo announced the arrival of a male, critically endangered Eastern black rhino calf last month and the community can help name this newest addition to the rhino herd.

The calf was born on Saturday, September 13, to 22-year-old mother Kibibbi and 25-year-old father Forrest. It is bonding behind the scenes with mom and is not yet on public view. Guests are encouraged to follow Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s social media channels  for when the calf will make its public debut at the Zoo’s Daniel Maltz Rhino Reserve.

Funds raised through the calf naming contest will go directly to this important conservation effort. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo supports a network of partners that work across the supply chain to combat illegal wildlife trade.
Eastern black rhinos are critically endangered, with fewer than 583 adults remaining in the wild. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has a long history of caring for this species, working alongside global conservation partners to secure a future for rhinos in the wild.

Each of these names are culturally significant to communities in Eastern black rhinos’ wild habitat range. The naming contest ends October 15 and the winning name will be announced on social media shortly after.
