Shopping Ohio’s Sales Tax Holiday: Important Info and Special Events

Ohio’s annual sales tax holiday will take place July 30 through August 8. During this time, tangible personal items that are $500 or less are tax-free.

Alcohol, tobacco, vape products or items that contain marijuana are excluded from the sales-tax holiday. Water crafts, motor vehicles and services are also excluded.

Ohio lawmakers made some adjustments to the tax holiday, extending it to 10 days this year instead of just a weekend. They also increased tangible personal item amount from $75 per item to $500 and it’s good for most items instead of just school supplies and clothing.

According to the Ohio Department of Taxation website, “In other words, if the selling price of an item is $600, is the first $500 exempt from sales tax?  No. The exemption applies to items selling for $500 or less. If an item sells for more than $500, tax is due on the entire selling price.”

Dining in at a restaurant also qualifies for the sales tax exemption, as long as each menu item is under $500.
