Let’s Celebrate International Merlot Day!

Let’s Celebrate International Merlot Day!

- in 2014 Editions

Doesn’t it seem that there is a day to celebrate everything? From peanut butter to dogs to homemade bread and picnics, you can find a celebration almost any day of the year.

And I am here to give you fair warning that this coming Friday, November 7th, is International Merlot Day.

Merlot is one of my favorite red varietals of wine. It is grown nearly everywhere there is a wine region. If the region is a cooler one, you’ll find a more tannic and earthier wine. If the region is warmer (like California), the wine will be smoother and a bit more fruit forward.  You can pair it with a ton of different foods, because it’s not a big giant in-your-face red with tons of oakiness..it’s more of a middle red, that won’t overwhelm or underwhelm most foods.

I am partial to the warmer climate Merlots myself, so in order to give you a fighting chance to prepare for International Merlot Day, I’m going to tell you about one of my favorites, which you can find all over Northeast Ohio, especially at a certain big store with a bulls-eye as a logo.  It’s a classy, go-to wine that is sure to please.

And in keeping with the classy, go-to theme here, the wine I am referring to is as classy and go-to as that little black dress in the closet.  It’s Little Black Dress Merlot (13.5%, California).bottle of Little Black Dress Merlot

This wine is a very pretty dark red color and gives off aromas of blackberry and blueberry with some cherry overtones. It tastes of all those lovely berries and a tinge of oak. But what really makes this wine a class act is the way it feels in the mouth. Medium bodied, soft and supple with such a smooth finish. Seriously, I wrote down the word “velvet” in my winey little tasting book.  So I guess you’d call this is a little black velvet dress, which is perfect now that we are heading into the holiday season.

Go ahead and buy some Little Black Dress Merlot for this Friday. I think you’ll like it. And make sure to have some on hand for the coming months…there is nothing like sipping some smooth velvety red wine to take the chill off a Northeast Ohio winter evening!

Cheers!
