Remembering the 2021 ‘Baby Boom’ at Akron Zoo

The Akron Zoo welcomed a total of 13 animal babies last year, making 2021 a “baby boom” to remember. Watch this video to see footage and photos of the babies born at the zoo in the last 12 months, including:

  • Two penguin chicks, Ernesto, hatched on March 12, and Xiomara, hatched on April 5.
  • Eight red wolf pups were born on April 22. (The species is critically endangered, with fewer than 20 wolves remaining in their native habitat. Akron Zoo made history when it was able to reintroduce four of the pups into their native habitat through a partnership with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.)
  • Andean condor chick Luca hatched on July 23.
  • A female Speke’s gazelle calf, Sagal, was born on July 30.
  • A white-cheeked gibbon baby was born on December 9.
