The Hidden Disability Sunflower symbol is a tool for voluntarily sharing that you have a condition or disability that is not immediately visible. It alerts others to the possible need for some extra help. Last month, Cuyahoga DD (cuyahogadd.org) and the Cuyahoga County Public Library Middleburg Heights Branch (cuyahogalibrary.org) hosted an adapted program to celebrate sunflowers. They provided us with the craft so families can make it at home.
Materials:
-Glue
-Yellow, green and tan cardstock or construction paper
-Scissors
Steps:
Cut out six yellow circles, approximately 3 inches in diameter.
Cut out one tan circle, approximately 4 inches in diameter.
Cut out four green leaves, about 5 inches in length.
Crafters then write one thing they like about themselves, or that makes them unique, on each of the six leaves.
Crafters write in the middle circle, “What I like about me!” or “What makes me unique!”
Glue each yellow petal to the underside of the tan circle. Glue the green leaves to the back of the flower.
If doing in a group setting, have each person share one or two attributes with the group, if they feel comfortable sharing. This is a great activity for kids and adults, and can be paired with a simple picture book about self-acceptance.
