On Thursday evening, August 21, after hours, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History was busy and buzzing with visitors for the once per year event, “Birds, Beasts, Brats & Beers.”
Can you feed a bobcat a bratwurst? We learned that bobcats prefer mice and other small critters! Thanks to the demonstrations and helpful assistance from the museum’s naturalists, patrons could learn anything and everything about the wildlife that lives in the Perkins Wildlife Center.
Bobcats, raccoons, river otters, vultures, screech owls, a coyote and a porcupine were just some of the animals that guests could say hello to while enjoying their beer and brats from Great Lakes Brewing Co. and The Pork Chop Shop.
Glenda Bogar, associate director of communications, explained that the proceeds from the event go towards resources for the animals that are housed in the wildlife center and under the museum’s care to keep them healthy and fed.
Harvey Webster, director of wildlife resources, added, “Cleveland Museum of Natural History is one of the best kept secrets in Cleveland.”

He continued, “We think this is a great opportunity and the neat thing about “Birds, Beasts, Brats & Beer” is that you can make an adult evening of it. You’ve got great brats and Great Lakes Beer and folks can have an opportunity to see what we do, training and enriching the lives of the animals that we’ve got here and learn more about these critters.
Guests could even enter to win an original piece of art created by one of the animal ambassadors by tagging a photo from the event with the hashtag #BBBB. (See our photos and tweets from the event on our Twitter page here.)
The museum offers several special events for adults and children alike each year including the upcoming “Owls and Howls” on October 25 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Webster elaborated, “We encourage kids to come here and not just expect to get a treat, but rather, help us make treats for the animals. It’s a nice twist on the Halloween theme and they can see how we use these enrichment devices with the animals. The kids get to be involved in our enrichment activities and it’s not about candy. It’s about the animals. “
