Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens hosts the 48th annual Ohio Mart and the 44th Stitchery Showcase on the estate on October 2-5, 2014. Hours are 10 a.m.- 5 p.m., Thursday-Saturday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sunday.
An Akron tradition, the centerpiece of Ohio Mart is an artisan crafts showcase featuring artists with talents in sculpture, photography, garden art, ceramics, textiles, and jewelry –as well as entertainment and hot gingerbread cookies (an Ohio Mart tradition). Stan Hywet is located at 714 N. Portage Path in Akron, Ohio.
“We invite the entire Akron community to attend to enjoy a beautiful autumn day on the estate,” notes Madeline Milford, chairperson of the 2014 Ohio Mart, a fundraiser produced by the Auxiliary Board of Stan Hywet. The autumn edition of “Inspiration in Bloom,” Stan Hywet’s popular display of fresh flowers is back and is part of the Combo Ticket, which includes Ohio Mart, Stitchery Showcase and a self-guided Manor House tour.
Stitchery Showcase, a judged stitchery display of 300 needlework pieces, is on exhibit in the Manor House and is presented by the Stan Hywet Needlework Guild. All needlework must be worked with a hand-manipulated needle on a ground except beading; ribbons are awarded in counted thread, canvas, surface stitchery, beading and hand quilting. The Courtyard near Molly’s Shop is filled with entertainment and pumpkin carving. Children’s activities (including a caricaturist) take place near Playgarden, the Estate’s newest outdoor experience.
Back in the Welcome Tent, guests may purchase tickets for the Sweepstake Raffle. An important part of Ohio Mart, tickets are $5 each, 3/$10 and 7/$20. In addition, a Goodyear blimp ride will be auctioned off in a silent auction.
The Food Court features Acme Catering, Totally Cooked, and Stan Hywet’s Molly’s Café serving delicious lunchtime fare. The Gingerbread Tent sells Stan Hywet’s “secret-recipe” gingerbread cookies, the Bakery Tent sells pastries and cookies from area bakeries. The Tudor Rose Pub, a sports bar featuring beer, wine and the large screen TV is a great place for a respite from the myriad of Ohio Mart activities.
Tickets to Ohio Mart, including Stitchery Showcase are $9 for adults, $2 for youth, ages 6-17. Children 5 and under are free with an adult. Combo tickets for Ohio Mart include a self-guided tour of the Manor House, Inspiration in Bloom and are $15 adults, $5 youth.
