More than 600 girls in third through eighth grade in Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit Counties are particpating in the fall season of Girls on the Run.
The Girls on the Run of Greater Summit 5k is the culminating event of a 10-week, curriculum-based program that focuses on improving confidence of young girls. Through activities such as running, games and discussions about issues important to pre-teens, participants learn how to celebrate being themselves. They are empowered with a greater self-awareness, a sense of achievement and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, confident young women.
After 10 weeks of activities and lessons, the girls, their volunteer coaches and families will come together on Sunday, Nov. 16 for a 5K race to celebrate their accomplishments.
The race starts at 9:30 a.m. at Lock 3 Park in downtown Akron.
Families and community runners are invited and can register for the 5k online. Runners must be registered by Nov. 13 to be guaranteed a t-shirt size.
