Northeast Ohio Parent magazine won first place in the “Best Monthly” category in the 2020 Ohio’s Best Journalism Contest, sponsored by the Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) chapters statewide.

This “Best of Show” honor was in the small circulation print category (fewer than 60,000) and was awarded based on the submission of Northeast Ohio Parent’s September 2019 and October 2019 issues.

The judges said, “The design in this magazine is so, so good. The clever use of backgrounds to reinforce the useful stories inside is especially noted.”

Recognized for their efforts were editor Angela Gartner, designer Sherry Lundberg and Northeast Ohio Parent magazine design staff, digital manager Denise Koeth, Brandon Szuminsky, and freelance editorial staff, and cover photographer Kim Stahnke.

“I am so proud of our hardworking team that strives to reach area parents with great content and awesome design every month,” said Brad Mitchell, Northeast Ohio Parent publisher and owner of parent company Mitchell Media. “This award is humbling and inspires us to aim even higher in the future!”

Journalists from the Northwest Excellence in Journalism Contest (Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Montana and Idaho) served as judges. SPJ, founded in 1909, is a national journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior.
