With NBA star LeBron James’ decision to take his talents to Cleveland, fans may see their emotions running high.
These high emotions over James’ decision can be healthy, but they also can cause trouble.
Bonding experience
The announcement is a positive, memorable experience for Northeast Ohio residents as they celebrate the big win together, says clinical psychologist Scott Bea, MD.
“For the average fan, such an event creates excitement and enthusiasm about the future,” Dr. Bea says. “This can create a sense of bonding, that we’re in this together and maybe can anticipate good times.”
It’s fun to support your team, but don’t let your emotions get the best of you if events don’t go the way you want, Dr. Bea says.
“This can become a problem when it starts to interfere with your well-being, when it interferes with your sense of pride in your city, those sorts of things,” Dr. Bea says. “If it’s getting your mood down, if you’re depressed, irritated, agitated, then it’s too much.”

Keeping it real
It’s essential to keep a healthy perspective, Dr. Bea says.
“You have a life of your own that is important and vital. Put energy into that and view this in its place – as an entertainment, as a distraction,” Dr. Bea says.
If your favorite team or player is taking you away from your work or family life, it may be time to think about your priorities, Dr. Bea says.
“Sometimes it might fuel your cynicism about the economics of athletics or the athletes of the day. That can all be fun, healthy debate, but put energy into your real life.”
