Hanna Perkins Center for Child Development will hold a conference, Working Through a Healthy Divorce: Addressing the Developmental Impact on Children, on November 3, 2018 from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
The one-day conference offers continuing education credit for early childhood educators, social workers, therapists and counselors. It also provides a separate track for parents who may be going through divorce themselves.
The conference focuses on the social-emotional impact of divorce on young children, and how caring adults — parents, teachers and counselors alike — can anticipate, recognize and address the developmental issues it can cause.
“Divorce is such a common source of developmental disruption for young children. It can have far-reaching and lasting effects,” said Pam Millar, director of community engagement at Hanna Perkins Center. “So many families go through it, but there isn’t much training offered for the parents or professionals who experience it from one perspective or another. In one day, this conference will offer insights that will serve parents, professionals and the children they work with for a lifetime.”
The conference is divided into three tracks: one for early childhood educators; one for social workers, therapists and counselors; and one for parents. All sessions will be led by trained, credentialed specialists from Hanna Perkins. Educators will earn 6 Ohio-approved hours, and social workers will earn 6.25 social work CEUs.
Cost to attend is $75 for social workers, $60 for educators and just $10 for parents. Discounts also are available for students in related fields.
Topics include common issues in blended families and how counselors can help; how teachers can recognize and address developmental stress in young children during parents’ divorce and separation; helping parents navigate the emotional minefield of divorce; and addressing the challenges blended families face.
The conference will be held at Hanna Perkins Center for Child Development, 19910 Malvern Road, Shaker Heights.
