Northeast Ohio Boomer and Beyond earned the General Excellence and four other first place awards for writing and layout at the North American Mature Publishers Association convention in Orlando, Fla., on Oct. 8.
Northeast Ohio Boomer and Beyond magazine, the sister publication to Northeast Ohio Parent, is a lifestyle publication for age people 50+. With a distribution of 35,000, it is available at 600 locations throughout Greater Cleveland.
Marie Elium is the editor. Laura Chadwick is the art director and designer.
“It is such an honor for our work on the magazine to be recognized on the national level with such prestigious awards,” states Publisher Brad Mitchell. “Our team strives to produce great content and design and it’s wonderful to receive affirmation that we’re on the right track from independent experts in the field as well as from our loyal and growing reader base.”
The School of Journalism of the University of Missouri in Columbia judged the entries submitted by the magazines. Northeast Ohio Boomer and Beyond competed in the B Division with magazines that have a circulation of 25,001-50,000.
For First Place General Excellence, the judges said, “This is a solid, distinctive publication that puts a premium on excellent writing, balanced design and useful content. Each issue has a strong mix of fresh ideas and storytelling, from a piece about a sanctuary that saves farm animals to a room-by-room breakdown of decluttering plans and a no-nonsense roadmap for retirement. The magazine reaches for a high bar and succeeds.”
The four other First Place awards captured were:
Editorial: Briefs/Shorts (Worth Noting)
Editorial: Feature Writing (“The Spicy Lamb Farm, The Wild, Woolly World of Life in a National Park Farm,” by Marie Elium)
Front Cover (Nov/Dec 2017 Volunteers/Beatles Abbey Road)
