Who remembers the excitement of going to a friend’s house for a birthday party? There would be a few balloons, simple games to play, a special cake and a kitchen table gathering to sing “Happy Birthday.” It was a few hours of fun, but a lifetime memory for the birthday child and their friends.
These days, the “Pinterest-worthy” displays we see on social media can make parents feel like simple isn’t special. Kids won’t remember perfection, but they’ll remember how much fun they had. A party at home can be more personal and relaxed — and just as memorable.
There are still plenty of ways to make an at-home, budget-friendly party that will be fun, meaningful and have your guests saying, “Best party ever.”
Here are seven ideas for your next birthday party.
1. Arts & Crafts
Tie-dye shirts, make friendship bracelets, decorate belt bags or hats with patches, or paint on canvases (paint by number or glow in the dark paint are especially fun for kids). Plus, it’s a take-home party favor. Decorating cupcakes, cookies or mini cakes is also a hit.
2. Science & STEM Experiments
Set up a “mad science lab” and have your little scientists create slime or fizzy fun “explosions.” It’s hands-on fun that only requires a few simple ingredients.
3. Sport Party
Host a wiffle ball, kickball or flag football game in your yard or local park. Have kids wear colored bandanas or T-shirts to make teams. Serve “concession stand” treats afterwards.
4. Games & Challenges
Set up oversized yard games (think Jenga, Kerplunk and cornhole) or create your own games or challenges that are appropriate for the age group. Classic games like musical chairs, freeze dance and relay races are fun for all ages.
5. Movie Night
Host an outdoor movie in your backyard or create a cozy indoor screening. Ask guests to bring their own blanket to sit on, and offer popcorn, drinks and candy for a full theater-style experience.
6. Dance & Karaoke
Create a playlist of kid-friendly hits and let kids show off their moves or singing skills. A simple karaoke machine or a speaker and microphone will work. Add a disco light and glow sticks to set the vibe.
7. Bring the Entertainment Home
Hiring a balloon artist, magician, mascot, costumed character or small animal experience to come to your home can sometimes be easier and more affordable than taking a group of kids on an outing. This can also be an unexpected surprise for the birthday child and guests.
Kid-Friendly Food
Keep it easy with sheet pizzas and juice boxes. Or, make it more interactive with a taco or hot dog bar and a special kid-friendly punch. Bite-sized foods are easy for kids to grab in between the fun (think chicken nuggets, pigs in a blanket, tea sandwiches). A classic birthday cake is always a favorite, but a donut or cookie display can add a fun twist to dessert.
