At Primrose School of Hudson and Primrose School of Solon, pre-k students participated in Fire Prevention Month with a visit from the Hudson and Solon fire departments. Students learned about fire safety and even toured fire trucks and equipment.
As October winds down, so does Fire Prevention Month — but the importance of the month’s key lessons remains.
The goal is to raise fire safety awareness and help protect homes and families.
The National Fire Protection Association has themed much of this year’s Fire Prevention Month around cooking safety, as cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths.
Tips the NFPA has used this month related to cooking safety include:
- Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove
- Always keep a lid nearby when cooking; if a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner
- Watch what you heat and set a timer
- Have a kid-free zone of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drinks are prepared
Other tips the NFPA recommends:
- Plan escape route in case of fire
- Test smoke alarms
- Choose an outside meeting place
- Practice home fire drill twice a year
