Fall Weekend Adventures in Ohio: Pumpkins & State Parks

Fall events in Ohio: Barnesville Pumpkin Festival

September marks the end of summer and the start of fall. Make the most of the change in seasons — and the start of the school year — by filling your weekends with family fun. Need a few ideas? We’ve got your plans all ready! From nearby festivals to farther away adventures, mark your calendars. Here are our suggestions for activities to keep your crew busy every weekend this month — and even beyond.

September 23:

During the Annual Barnesville Pumpkin Festival, now in its 54th year, about 100,000 visitors make their way through a packed schedule of activities and events, including live entertainment and a parade. And yes, there’s a pumpkin pie eating contest, as well as a pumpkin decorating prize. But perhaps the most ah-inducing part of the festival for kids? The Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off. Last year’s behemoth weighed in at 1,739 pounds.

As long as you’ve driven the 2-3 hours to Barnesville (90 minutes south of Canton), consider exploring the area, like nearby Salt Fork State Park, which happens to be the state’s largest at 17,229 acres. Extend the day by staying at the park’s lodge to make it even easier to turn your day-trip into a weekend retreat.

Look ahead to fall weekend fun the rest of this month, too!

September 30: Corn Mazes & Ledges
