At-Home Education Kits to Supplement Your Child’s Learning

Whether your child is doing remote learning, homeschooling, or has headed back to the classroom this fall, area museums and attractions offer ways to supplement their education with hands-on learning kits. Check out the examples below:

 

Children’s Museum of Cleveland

Let’s Learn Activity Boxes
CMC’s new Let’s Learn activity boxes are packed full of engaging experiments, crafts and activities designed for young minds. Each box comes with five activities, including all lessons and materials. All boxes are designed to align with State of Ohio Learning Standards, so they will complement the curriculum that your child is learning in school. Let’s Learn boxes ship for free anywhere in the contiguous United States.

Akron Children’s Museum

Adventure Backpacks
Take an adventure outside of your home or in an area park with these adventures, designed for children ages 3-7 years old. The animal track-themed backpack is filled with more than a dozen activities with exciting introductory videos, and materials like a super adventurer cape, eye mask, a fun-print ACM face covering, seven healthy and animal-themed recipes, an “All About Tracks” book and more. Each backpack comes with lessons aligned with the State of Ohio Early Learning Standards and materials to complete the activity. Adventure Backpacks ship anywhere in the contiguous United States.

The Wilderness Center

Your Wild Classroom
Through Your Wild Classroom, the Wilderness Center, located in Wilmot, Ohio, offers nature-based science modules focused on a theme. Each will begin with an introductory presentation that can be joined live via Zoom or viewed on YouTube. Modules contain four lessons, including links to short, introductory videos; parent/teacher lesson plans; activity descriptions; and worksheets. A live wrap-up and quiz show will review what was covered in each module and reinforce the fun of learning. Each module coincides with Ohio’s standards for grades K-5. Activities and lessons will be geared for grades 3-5, but are easily adaptable by the teacher or parent for all elementary grades.

Topics for the fall and spring semesters include:
Entomology – Beginning August 24
Forestry – Beginning September 21
Soil – Beginning October 19
Ornithology – Beginning November 16
Bonus Activity (Available when full semester is purchased), Landforms and Mapping – Beginning December 14
Geology – Beginning January 11
Mammalogy – Beginning February 8
Botany – Beginning March 8
Herpetology – Beginning April 5
Bonus Activity (Available when full semester is purchased), Outdoor Adventure – Beginning April 26

Cost: $25 per module for TWC members or $30 per module for nonmembers. Those who register for the full semester will receive the bonus activity at the end of the semester. Separate pricing and individualized scheduling is available for traditional classrooms and homeschool pods.
