At 41 North, kids ages 14 and older can join an adult to paddle a single kayak and receive hands-on instruction from staff. This local business is beginner-friendly, and safety is a priority. In the heart of Shaker Heights lays a pristine nature oasis: Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. This free greenspace provides hands-on nature experiences and discovery for all ages. From Family Fishing Day to Bird Walks and Nature Story Time, this nature center reinvents what it means to explore outdoors. It’s also not too late to register for Outdoor Adventure Camps, offering cool topics from Magical Monarchs to Polliwogs and Pupas for ages Pre-K to 9th grade.
Cleveland Cultural Gardens

A trip to the Cleveland Cultural Gardens should be on every Northeast Ohio family’s adventure bucket list! With more than 30 gardens celebrating cultures around the world, it’s a beautiful and educational spot to pack a picnic and discover different cultures. The Gardens run along Martin Luther King and East boulevards in Rockefeller Park. Don’t forget your camera for beautiful pictures or your bikes for a self-guided tour on two (or four) wheels.
Bonus: Mark your calendar for One World Day on September 16, 2018! The Gardens come alive with a Parade of Nations, performances and food from around the world.
USS Cod Submarine Memorial
Cleveland (Downtown)
Located at North Coast Harbor between the Great Lakes Science Center and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame sits the historical Cod Submarine. Be a sailor for a day as you climb down ladders, look through portholes and travel room-to-room in this preserved submarine ship museum from World War II. Best of all, pictures are welcome and kids are permitted to touch and play respectfully while adults can dig into the history. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 seniors and veterans, $7 youths (grades K-12). Preschoolers and active duty in military uniform are admitted for free.
