Make Your Own Sidewalk Chalk

Make Your Own Sidewalk Chalk

Sidewalk Chalk Craft Pinterest Make Your Own Northeast OhioThe Northeast Ohio Parent team has perused many Pinterest pages and found this well-received recipe for making your own sidewalk chalk through the Playful Learning website. Heather Jennings, the creator of Poppy Haus, a blog about food, play and design, provided the recipe. “Sidewalk chalk is a springtime favorite for us,” Jennings says. “We could spend a whole sunny afternoon coloring on the ground.”

Note:  It takes at least 12 hours for the chalk to dry, so plan ahead for this project.

Instructions:

Cut the tube into 5-inch segments. Line the interiors with wax paper, tape the base to seal one end and set aside.

The following is the recipe proportions for one color:

Mix 2-3 Tbsp. of tempera paint with 1/2 cup of water. Stir in 3/4 cup of plaster of Paris. Spoon the mixture into a sandwich baggy and snip the end. Squeeze the contents into the tube. Prop straight up (use the masking tape ring to support the tubes).

Allow to dry at room temperature for at least 12 hours.
